MERV = Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value

The original purpose of a furnace filter was to protect the furnace and air conditioning coil. In recent years it has become popular to also use the furnace filter to improve indoor air quality. There are several different types available.

MERV 1 to 4 filters are the least effective filters available on the market. They provide minimum protection for your furnace and do little to improve indoor air quality.

MERV 5 to 7 filters are better but are usually a 1” wide extended surface (pleated) type that is too restrictive to air flow. This may cause your furnace to overheat or air conditioner to freeze up. Clogged filters can destroy equipment and most manufacturers advise against using 1” wide extended surface filters for this reason. We encounter many failed furnaces and air conditioners due to clogged filters.

MERV 8 to 13 filters require a 4 to 7 inch wide cabinet (media filter) but offer the best protection and filtration for your money. Once you have the media filter cabinet installed, you can choose from a large range of MERV rated filters. Media filters do an excellent job of protecting your furnace and coil from dirt, which is mechanical equipment’s worst enemy.

MERV 16 to 20 HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filters are considered to be the best known air cleaning devices. The EPA, American Lung Association and Consumer Reports all recommend HEPA filtration.

The above descriptions are methods of mechanical air filtration. Mechanical filtration is the best known way to improve indoor air quality.

Some air purification equipment produce ozone gas. Ozone gas is considered dangerous by the EPA, American Lung Association, and Consumer Reports. These devices are classified as ozone generators and their use is not advised. Ozone generators produce NO known health benefits and ozone gas is corrosive.
