Is Your Furnace Making a Weird Noise?

My Furnace Makes a Weird Noise. What Does It Mean?

Your furnace may make a variety of noises while it’s running. Some are normal, depending on the type of furnace you have. It’s normal for older furnaces to make a bit more noise, while some of the newer, high-efficiency furnaces are typically very quiet.

However, there are several noises that may warrant an inspection from an RCM Heating and Cooling technician. Here are some possible sounds you may hear from your furnace, and some clues as to what the sounds may mean.
  • Constant buzzing: If you hear a constant buzzing noise while your furnace is running, it is usually caused by a faulty transformer or circuit board relay.
  • Groaning: If you hear groaning when the blower motor is on, this can indicate a faulty blower motor or capacitor.
  • Booming: A booming noise is usually an indication of the main air duct expanding or contracting. This may be the result of a clogged air filter, as this can cause uneven pressure in each side of the furnace.
  • Vibration or shaking: Vibrating or shaking is usually a blower wheel that is off-balance or coming loose at the hub.

In addition, some old furnaces make a flame roll-out sound that is almost exactly like that of a barbecue grill being lit with too much lighter fuel. This is an indication of a clogged heat exchanger or flue and can be very dangerous. In addition, if your home has unusually high humidity, this could also be a sign of a leaking heat exchanger.

In fact, furnaces that are older than fifteen years old often need to be replaced due to the high chance of compromised heat exchangers and expensive, frequent repairs. If any of these symptoms arise, please call RCM Heating and Cooling immediately so we can ensure the safety of you and your family.

If you hear or experience any of the above sounds or scenarios, or if your furnace is over fifteen years old, please call RCM Heating and Cooling at 815-458-5425. Our goal is to make your home as comfortable and safe as possible, and that includes controlling the noise level of your furnace to the best of our ability.
