Smell coming from a gas furnace – What could it mean?

There are a lot of different odors that can mean different things with your furnace. The key is to figuring out exactly what the odor you are smelling is and getting it resolved. Below you will find a list 5 possible things that could be leading to that odor!

Seasonal burning smell
Turning on your furnace after months of misuse can cause a predictable burning smell. No need to be alarmed, this is caused by dust burning off in the duct-work. The odor will subside in time although it is not pleasant.

The rotten egg smell of gas
The rotten egg odor can be the most alarming of odors coming from your furnace. When you smell the rotten egg’s there could be a cracked heat exchanger or a gas leak. It’s best to call your local heating and cooling company at that point.

Electrical burning smell
Electrical odors are similar to the odor of burnt plastic. There could be numerous reasons this is happening, most likely the furnace is overheating or other parts are wearing down. Call your local heating and cooling company to prevent further expensive repairs.

Musty Smell
This is an unpleasant odor that should be addressed as soon as possible. If you have a whole-house humidifier, check here first. The humidifier filter could have grown mold or mildew. If you don’t have a humidifier, check your furnace filter which should be changed monthly. An old, dirty filter could be circulating unpleasant smells throughout your home.
